At Southern Smiles Orthodontics, your comfort is our priority. While true orthodontic emergencies are rare, we’re here for you when they happen.
If you’re experiencing severe pain or an appliance issue you can’t fix on your own, call our office right away. We’ll schedule an appointment to resolve the issue quickly.
Common Orthodontic Issues & At-Home Relief Tips
You may be able to relieve some discomfort at home until we can see you. Here’s how:
Loose Parts
If a piece of your appliance comes loose and you can remove it, place it in a small bag or envelope and bring it to your next appointment.
Poking Wires
Use a small piece of orthodontic wax to cover any part of the wire that’s irritating your cheeks or gums.
You can also try using the eraser end of a pencil to gently push the wire flat against the tooth.
Wire Out of Place
If a wire slides out of position, you can use needle-nosed pliers to carefully reposition it back into the bracket. If that’s not possible, clip the end with clean fingernail clippers and place wax on the tip.
Soreness After Braces
It’s common to feel some soreness for 3–5 days after getting braces. Stick to soft foods and rinse with warm salt water (1 tsp salt in 8 oz warm water) to ease discomfort.
You can also use Orabase or take Tylenol/Acetaminophen if needed.
Avoid ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and naproxen (Aleve) as they may slow down tooth movement.
Irritated Lips, Cheeks, or Tongue
Mild irritation is normal during the first couple of weeks. Use wax to cover sharp spots—we’ll show you how!
Specific Issues
Loose Bracket or Band
If it’s still attached to the wire, leave it in place and cover with wax for comfort.
If it comes off completely, store it safely and call us to schedule a repair.
Loose Appliance
Use wax on the area causing irritation. Contact our office if it continues to bother you.
Headgear Discomfort
Make sure you’re wearing your headgear exactly as instructed. If the metal facebow is bent or painful, give us a call right away.
Don’t Wait—Call Us
Even if you’ve relieved the discomfort temporarily, it’s important to contact our office so we can schedule a repair. Leaving appliances damaged can delay your treatment.
